Samsung has launched their new Android based Smart phone, Galaxy S2 Plus (GT-I9105) in India at Rs.22,900. It is currently available online via infibeam and soon other online retailers will also start selling this smartphone, and will be also available in retail stores in your local market. This phone was announced earlier and Samsung has launched it with tweaking a little bit inside the SGS2. The predecessor original Galaxy S2 was launched in India in 2011 and since then it is selling in the market; but yes Samsung has slashed down its price many times now and now it is available in the market for Rs.24,000 (add or subtract few bucks). S2 Plus retains the original shape & design of old S2 but it will come with a new fresh Android Jelly Bean Operating System version 4.1.2 and with the UI TouchWiz 5.0 as can be seen in the new Galaxy S3 & Galaxy Note 2. As Jelly Bean is on board it is now can be upgraded to upcoming new Jelly Bean update. It has the same Super Amoled Plus capacitive touchscreen, 16 Million Vivid colors, 480×800 resolution with a display size of 4.3 inches (~217 ppi) and a 10 finger Multitouch, capable of playing 1080p video. But surprisingly there will be no ‘Gorilla Glass’ protection this time as Samsung has decided to leave its old buddy. The new Galaxy S2 has gained some weight this time; instead it is 5 gm heavier than the original S2 @ 121 gm. Then what is the difference we are going to experience in this new model? Well the magical minor up gradation has been done inside with the Hardware.
Samsung has opted to leave the Dual-Core ‘Exynos’ Processor in this model. Well in this case Galaxy s2 Plus is coming with “Broadcom BC28155” chipset clocked @ 1.2 Ghz, the same speed as old Galaxy S2. It has a “Broadcom VideoCore IV” GPU instead of “Mali 400” GPU which was amazing. Samsung is claiming this new CPU & GPU combination will bring better power efficiency and also come up to expectations. The 1 GB RAM will remain the same as it is there in old S2, but this time Samsung has chopped the internal storage from old S2’s 16 GB/ 32 GB to 8 GB; we think this is not a good strategy of cost cutting as at least 16 GB can be given at this price tag. Instead of having maximum 32 GB external Micro SD card support this new model can handle up to 64 GB of data.
The camera megapixel remains the same as this new Plus also comes with a 8 Megapixel rear camera having an LED flash, autofocus but this time with a ‘zero lag’ shutter speed which will easily capture fast moving objects more accurately; and a 2 Megapixel camera at the front for self-shot & video calling purpose. The rear 8 MP camera is capable of shooting photos at a maximum resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels and also has features like face & smile detection, image stabilizer, touch – focus, panorama mode, continuous shot etc. Video can be recorded by the rear 8 MP camera in Full HD 1080p resolution @30 frames per second.
There are now some new features added such as NFC & GLONASS for A-GPS. We are not sure this NFC feature is available in Indian model or not, for that we will have to wait as this specs is now very common in Super Phones. New improved GPS Locking capability can be found in Galaxy S2 Plus as there is GLONASS support available which will help location lock times quickly. Other existing apps & features such as SNS integration, Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, document viewer, image/video editor, Picasa, Swype, Google Play etc .
It has Bluetooth ver 3.0+ and Wi-Fi with Wi-Fi hotspot finder, having FM transmitter and MHL-enabled standard micro USB port supports USB on-the-go (OTG) also. The 1650 mAh battery is coming again to boost this new device. The talk time is expected to be the same over 2G / 3G network, but the overall battery performance has to be better than the previous old S2 model as it is coming stuffed with new CPU and we can assume the battery consumption should be lesser. It will be available in 2 colors – Chic White and Dark Blue.
